Dandelion Root Coffee

Preparing The Dandelion Root

Start by finding some Dandelion and dig up the roots. The best time for this is early autumn when the roots have had more time to establish.

If you have this growing in your own garden then great, digging up the countryside is not ideal and if on farmers land you would need to get permission to do this.

When you have collected enough root, wash them making sure you remove any dirt and mud, then chop roughly into 1cm cubes.

Place on a baking tray and roast in a pre heated oven at 180C for 45 minutes.

Once out of the oven, grind in a pestle and mortar or coffee grinder, store in an air tight container.

Roasted and ground Dandelion root

Ingredients - makes 1 cup

1tsp ground, roasted dandelion root

250ml boiling water

milk to serve

honey to taste

Dandelion flower

Method

Place the Dandelion root in a coffee plunger and add the boiling water.

Leave to infuse for around 10 minutes and then serve with milk and honey.

This coffee is caffeine free, try adding some regular ground coffee if like me you still want that caffeine hit, I use a ratio of 2/3 Dandelion root to 1/3 ground coffee.
